Nadine Davies – CEO

Nadine is the founder and CEO of Strategic Wealth and has been with the business since 2007. Nadine started her career with Investec Asset Management in Johannesburg, South Africa and then moved to Botswana to set up Strategic Wealth in 2007. She is responsible for the strategic management and business development of the firm. Nadine has extensive knowledge of the Botswana retirement funds and financial services industry. Nadine holds a Bachelor of Business Administration with First Class Honours from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, a COP with distinction (Long-term Insurance) and Postgraduate diploma in Financial Planning from the University of the Free State. She also holds a B. Com degree from the University of Stellenbosch.

Nadine’s Story:

I grew up in Francistown on a cattle farm along the Old Matseloje Road. From when I was a little girl, my gran told me to become an accountant and to save, save, save! I didn’t really understand what that was all about, but only recently did I realise that she was afraid of losing her wealth. She was an amazing woman and I have many fond memories of baking with her, playing cards (for money of course) and going to Sunday mass. I have realised that for so many people, investing and planning for the future is scary and it’s hardly a wonder why it’s often too stressful to even think about. I decided to join the financial services industry because I had absolutely no idea about how it worked and it seemed like it was one of the world’s best kept secrets. My mission is to make finance and investing something that all Batswana can be familiar with and to provide individuals with the basic knowledge to be able to make good decisions so that they can build a better financial future for themselves.

Baboloki Mothuti – Asset Consultant

Baboloki Mothuti is an Asset Consultant at Strategic Wealth as from October 2018. He started his career at Fleming Asset Management in 2009 as a pricing officer, dealing with portfolio data veracity. He was later promoted to Performance and Compliance Analyst. In 2015 Baboloki was recruited by a local investment risk management company, Malaczynski Burn Risk Management as a Business Development Manager and Consultant, a role he held for three years. Baboloki holds a BA (Economics and Accounting) from the University of Botswana.

Baboloki’s Story:

I hail from Mahalapye in Dilaene ward. My mother struggled raising five children, and we each realised quite early on in life that failure was not an option. By the time I reached tertiary level, my drive was to ensure that my own family could live a comfortable life, without the challenges my mother had to face. As I entrenched myself in the retirement industry, I developed a passion for wealth management and retirement fund benefit business, driven to a large degree by my exposure to relatives that lived lavish lives during their working careers, only to be reduced to near poverty in their retirement. My ambition is fuelled by their plight.

I believe in fostering a culture of responsibility that proactively seeks to address client’s challenges. This is to be achieved by fully understanding client and member concerns with regards to the achievement of a financial position at retirement that they can aspire to. I want to help deliver the end-result that will leave fund members with a dignified pension benefit in their retirement years.

Lame Botshoma – Chief Investment Officer (Designate)

Lame is the CIO designate at Strategic Wealth and joined the firm in early 2020. He was previously was the Lead CFA Lecturer at Arthur Portland for the CFA program. Prior to that, Lame held various roles in the financial services industry. Lame holds a Bachelors in Finance from the University of Botswana, COP, and himself completed the CFA program in 2019.

Lame’s Story:

Having been an athlete most of my life, I am quite competitive and always up for a challenge. As a small boy I was certain I would leave school at the age of 15 to become a professional tennis player. That deadline seemed to be continually pushed back by a year, every year until I entered Varsity. I’m curious about the human mind and if I hadn’t joined the financial services industry, I probably would have become a psychologist or even a football coach. Although all these three may seem worlds apart, it is not so for me.

Many people do not know that personal finance issues have an emotional aspect to them. This is why some intelligent individuals like accountants, doctors or engineers can end up living beyond their means and ultimately end up facing financial difficulties.  We all have habits, which come from making numerous small decisions, which over time can harden to become our default patterns of behavior. This is how the human mind learns to conserve energy. This same patterns and habits can apply to money as well!

Whenever we must make a decision with financial implications, most of the time the conflict is between our reasoning (our logic) and our emotions. Those who can make a habit out of following their logic, are more likely to be able to retire comfortably.

“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.” Victor E. Frankl

Thabo Makame  – Executive Assistant

Thabo a growing Financial Services specialist with 8 years of experience in the Financial Services industry. He has worked  in quantitative and regulatory inclined roles as a Fixed Income Analyst at and Assistant Management Accountant at Botswana Insurance Fund Management (Bifm), and Lending Manager at Guile & Khoison Capital.Aside the Financial services, he had a brief stint in the energy and petroleum industry, where he worked as Site Manager in a Total Franchise. He currently works for Strategic Wealth Botswana in Client Relations responsible for building and establishing positive relationships between a company and its clients, as well as Executive Assistant to the CEO. Mr Makame holds a Bachelor of Finance degree from University of Botswana.

Thabo’s Story:

Echoing the sentiments of my late Great Grandmother, in jest she would proclaim” Ga gona kgomo ya boroko ngwanake”, directly translated to mean nothing worthwhile ever comes easy. Of course, Its historical context derived from a bygone era when cattle where no doubt the most widely accepted if not indeed the only form of currency and wealth. As a farming enthusiast in her own right, she was determined to impart the sense of discipline that would see us through in life. As I have matured over the years, I sought for ways I could improve my life, partly informing a lot of the decisions I took, not to say the least the courses of study and chosen fields of work. Of these experiences, none has been more compelling, none more impactful than the investment industry. You see unlike the intergenerational wealth we were accustomed to as a people, tied to basic commodities as cattle and grain, this was a lot bigger, more exciting, far more reaching. Not only could the local community participate, indeed the whole world could participate. Capital markets have presented to Africa, doors of opportunity that would have otherwise remained locked. I have been privileged to work in Asset management and now in Asset consulting, like the two sides to a coin, the players in the market are indeed the game changers and I can only say I am thankful to be one. How I wish I could sit with her across the table to show her all these things whilst discussing the endless possibilities. So let me introduce myself once again, I am my grandmother’s child.

Botho Orapeleng – Office Administrator

Botho is an administration officer at Strategic Wealth who joined in 2018. Botho holds a paramedic diploma and has 7 years’ experience in administration, starting with Rescue One Emergency medical services in 2013 and Cleanico Cleaning Services in 2017. She is responsible for meeting planning, filing, preparing tender documents and stakeholder correspondence.

Botho’s Story:

I am Palapye- born and growing up, I lost my grandfather and uncle early to a car accident, and another uncle to the same cause when I was 13. From that day onwards I wanted to help injured people, which is why I became a paramedic. I joined Rescue One emergency medical services In 2013 but sometime later, the finance manager, seeing potential in me, persuaded me to join their accounts department.  I developed a new love of working with clients, and accounting and administration work.  I followed this new interest to a job at Strategic wealth, even though I had no idea then of how the financial industry worked. Growing up I was never taught how to save, let alone plan for my future. It has been exciting to learn more about the financial services industry and I remain eager to gain more experience and to be able to do my part in helping educate Batswana out there, who are as clueless as I have been.

Ontiretse Matumo – Accounts officer

Ontiretse is the Accounts Officer for Strategic Wealth and joined in November 2018. Ontiretse is responsible for maintaining the financial records of the firm. He started his career under the Botswana Internship Program at the Department of Forestry and Range Resources in December 2016, then moved to Accountant General and Botswana Telecommunications in 2017. Ontiretse holds a CIMA (Diploma in Management Accounting) from Botswana Accountancy College and AAT (Level 4) from Gaborone Institute of Professional Studies.

Ontiretse’s Story:

I grew up in the mining town of Selebi Phikwe. From my upbringing I knew nothing about the financial industry and accounting. All I wanted was to work at BCL mine because the mine had played a vital role in our upbringing. We would see the workers knocking off wearing overalls and boots and as a boy, this path was all I could think of. After school I decided to pursue a tertiary education, while I had never studied accounting, I wanted a new challenge and I decided to go for it. It was difficult at first and stressful, but I was committed and things got better. When I joined Strategic Wealth, I knew little about the financial services industry and how it worked, but I have grown much and continue to learn about financial services and retirement funds.

In this role I have really enjoyed being able to help people, whether through providing advice, training, management, leadership or service.  Another advantage for me in financial services has been the opportunity to continuously learn, and in my long career I have been a lawyer, legal specialist, compliance officer, investment adviser, trainer, asset consultant, sales manager, product manager, marketing manager, the list is endless, but in every opportunity, I have grown as person and have been able to continue to help others.  My role at Strategic Wealth allows me to continue to learn and grow, while sharing my knowledge and experience with our team to help support and develop them, while also helping our clients and their employees and members with financial services and retirement planning.
